Home and garden
Helpful information on the advertising rules for products or services related to home and garden improvements.
Products relating to home and garden improvements, such as power tools and hedge trimmers, can often require the user to wear protective equipment. To avoid falling foul of the ad rules, we would always recommend any ads that depict these types of products being used should also show the user in the appropriate safety gear.
Other rules relevant to home and garden improvement ads include those concerning guarantees and warranties.
Ads must make clear each significant limitation to an advertised guarantee that has implications for a consumer’s rights. For example, if a warranty covers parts but not labour, if the guarantee applies only in certain circumstances, or consumers have to fulfill certain criteria to validate their guarantee. Furthermore, if advertisers offer a money-back guarantee our rules require advertisers must promptly refund consumers who make valid claims.
Finally, advertisers for home and garden improvements should not exaggerate the capabilities of their product and should take care to hold adequate evidence for any claims they do make, for example in relation to the performance or life-span of the product.
